Program Details

This program operates as a partnership, “Multicultural Settlement and Educational Partnership”, (MSEP) comprising the two local regional school boards, the Dufferin, Peel, Catholic School Board (DPCDSB)  and Peel Dufferin School Board (PDSB) and a number of regional Settlement and community support agencies, including Malton Neighbourhood Services.

It is funded by the Federal Government through a contribution agreement with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Our School Settlement Workers offer settlement supports and services to newcomer and other immigrant students and their families. They mainly serve schools in Malton. They collaborate closely with the schools acting as intermediary and liaison support for them in their relations with students and parents. They also help families connect with community resources and services by offering them timely information and referrals for other community and settlement supports as needed.

Additionally, they assist with organizing before and after school activities, school orientation activities for new students and help providing information and referrals to March Break and summer camps and other youth programs. And they collaborate with ESL teachers to organize and facilitate special cultural and religious celebrations, inform newcomer students on extracurricular and other school activities.

For parents of secondary students, they conduct information sessions on graduation requirements, post-secondary education, financing post-secondary education, taxation.  As well, they provide personal supportive services to families in need.

During the early months of the pandemic, they worked closely with the schools and families distributing laptops and helping to orient students and their parents with online learning activities.
